how to plan a day hike near vancouver

A simple checklist: pick a trail, check conditions, passes, getting there, and a trip plan.

Plan a day hike in five steps: choose a trail that fits your group, check weather and trail conditions, book any pass, plan the drive, ferry or transit, and leave a trip plan with someone who will call for help if you are late.

  1. Pick a trail. Match time, distance and climb to the slowest person. Use Find a hike or the lists.
  2. Check conditions. The land manager's page for closures and advisories, Environment Canada for the forecast, and Avalanche Canada if there is snow.
  3. Book passes. Some BC Parks need a free day-use pass. See the pass guide.
  4. Plan getting there. DriveBC for highways, TransLink for transit, BC Ferries for island and Sunshine Coast hikes.
  5. Leave a trip plan. Use the AdventureSmart trip plan and set a turnaround time.

Your trail ticket on each trail page shows a suggested start ("boarding") time to help you finish in daylight.

good to know cam

Hi, I'm Cam Appleton. I love Vancouver and I love getting out on its trails. When I went looking for a simple, easy hiking guide for around here, I couldn't find one I liked. I also really like helping people, so I built this one.

My day job is real estate. I help people buy, sell and lease. I hope you're enjoying the start of Hike Vancouver. I wrote these guides the way I'd explain things to a friend at the trailhead.
